Nigeria, with a population of over 205 million, is the most populated country in Africa! It's divided into 36 states, with Abuja as the Federal Capital. Imo State in the southeast is one of the states, and where we do our medical mission programs. We provide healthcare free of charge to the poor, the needy and less privileged, who have no access to primary healthcare services. At the end of each medical mission program, we strive to leave an improved healthcare system, and making a positive difference in the lives of so many people!
Nigeria is a wealthy oil-rich country; but because of mismanagement and corruption, it's still a country in desperate need of help, especially in the area of healthcare services and education. The healthcare service delivery in the country is very poor! Nigeria ranks among the worst in the world in terms of access and quality of care. In 2018, it ranked number 142 out of 195 countries in the world in the medical journal: The Lancet. World Bank ranks Nigeria as number 42 on a scale of 100 on a universal coverage index: indicating the availability of essential healthcare services in the participating countries. Nigeria accounts for nearly 20% of global maternal deaths. And, it's among the five countries with the highest maternal deaths in the world! Women, young girls and children are the worst affected by the poor healthcare services, especially among those living in the rural areas where we do our work.
